Have you walked through difficult messy years facing season after season of hardships that left you wondering ‘if’ and ‘when it would end? I know that heartache.
Still in the middle of a somewhat ‘hard season’ God dropped this verse in my lap.
The Lord spoke to me saying, “You have circled this mountain long enough. Now turn north… – Deuteronomy 2:2-3
Circling the mountain
God spoke the verse above to the Israelites after wondering the dessert for 40 years, waiting to enter the promise land.
Do you think that maybe they got tired of all that wondering? Do you think they also asked ‘if’ and ‘when’ it would end?
Because we can read ahead of their story we find they do indeed enter the promise land. We are also told why they were made to wait all those years.
The refining process
They were going through a refining process. God was preparing them for the promise land. When they were finally ready, He told them – turn north.
The refining process is long, hard and down right messy. That’s putting it lightly, isn’t it?
But who would we be without going through the “difficult?” I probably wouldn’t be writing this right now if I hadn’t faced hard times.
Who would we relate to if we did not understand, first hand, what struggle and pain looks like?
How would we know the direction we are suppose to go in, if we didn’t ask the probing questions… Who am I? What do I want? Who has God created me to be?
Digging through the mess we begin to uncover certain truths that act as a new foundation, the one we begin to rebuild our lives on.
The heartache and tears – they are a part of the refining process. I need to remind myself of that. It’s not for nothing. It’s never for nothing.
It takes time – like refining wine – it doesn’t happen instantly. Sometimes, many times, it takes years. But don’t let that dishearten you.
You don’t know what lays ahead.
For I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope. – Jeremiah 29:11
What if He is asking you to wait because He is not only preparing you, He is preparing a way for you?
I know it can feel like a punishment at times. But I believe, if we lean into Him, we will see His hands at work in ways that say “I hear you. I love you. I am for you. Wait on me.”
The next step
The Israelites had more battles to fight even AFTER entering the Promise Land. But God was with them. He was on their side. They won the battles when God was first in their life! When they headed the right direction – there was beauty and abundance!
That is the inspiration behind this necklace – found HERE in my online boutique. It’s called Turning North.
You can find many other pieces like these in my boutique. There is as story behind each of them.
Are you still in the dessert?
Do you feel like you are still wondering aimlessly around?
My advice? Press on and remember this isn’t for nothing. You are being prepared for what comes next!
And please, don’t let it make you bitter. I have struggled with bitterness and let me just say, you want nothing to do with it’s depths of defeat. It’s a bottomless pit that will swallow you whole, disabling you, preventing joy and happiness.
When I shared my hurt and opened my life up to God, I got to experience His love and strength in ways that left me in complete awe. I watched as He provided for me, protected me, and opened doors of blessing and opportunity. At times, for no other reason than to say “I hear you, I love you.” In those moments that I saw – He really is in complete control. He’s not asking for my help. He is asking for my surrender.
And so I leave you with this. Turn North your thoughts, upward and onward.
